Nom Wah’s  Perilous Century of Dim Sum

Nom Wah Tea Parlor is an iconic storefront, and Chinatown’s oldest restaurant. As part of a deeper exploration into the Chinatown neighborhood during the pandemic, The New York Times decided to turn its AR focus onto this iconic storefront, to show its legacy and evolution throughout the decades.

The Effect allows users to step through a portal into Doyers St. and find themselves in front of the Nom Wah storefront. Next to it, they can see a gallery of images of the restaurant through time, or they can choose to stroll down the street and find themselves immersed in this Chinatown street.
